Mentor. n. A trusted counselor or guide, especially in an occupational setting.
Mentoring by a mentor means walking alongside someone who's been there, done that. It has come to mean the process by which someone "pours themselves" into another. Jesus mentored his apprentices, better known as the twelve disciples. He trained them to do what he was doing.
And that's what mentoring with the HCNA is all about. Training. Pouring ourselves into you. Sharing what we know. And we do it gladly without expectation of payment.
Why? For one, because we believe this "stuff" is far too important to make money off of it. The church in North America is shrinking, as is Christianity (see Forward, State of the Faith, for more information) and we believe the House Church and other innovative ways of being church is one of the solutions. We want you, your friends, your colleagues, and the world to know how to be the church, not just go to church.
How? There's two levels to this question. The first, how do you get Online "Real Time" Mentoring? There are only Three requirements:
- You must be interested in "doing" House Church or another alternative to a bricks-and-mortar church (we're not opposed to the conventional church - not at all - but the House Church and other Church-Without-Walls alternatives are what we're qualified to train in).
- You will need an Internet connection with a computer that has a sound card, speakers and a microphone (if you have a webcam, all the better).
- You'll need Yahoo Messenger (we're not connected with Yahoo, but they provide free audio-video conferencing).
When you have all this, simply log on during our weekly Online Real Time Mentoring session and you're set. We'll do the training, you participate in the session, and away you go.
The second level of "how" is how can we afford to do this? Don't you have to make a living? The answer to that is yes, making a living is important (1 Timothy 5:8). To that end we offer personal coaching, book sales (we make a portion on any book you buy through Amazon.com via our website), seminar and workshop leadership, and doing whatever else we have to do to make the money last as long as the month is. Like you, we don't make any money as leaders of our individual House Churches (or other Church-Without-Walls alternatives), so we continue to develop income in other ways to support our ministry.
What You Can Expect from Mentoring
HCNA Online Real Time Mentoring is a weekly online audio-video chat led by Bill Tenny-Brittian and occasionally other experienced leaders. During the one-hour session you will receive training in some aspect of House Church or Church-Without-Walls alternatives. You'll also get a brief introduction to a Bible study lesson designed for the House Church. And there is a time for sharing personal prayer requests (how can we pray for you during the week) - we take prayer very seriously and will pray for you daily during the week.
